Let Them Eat Cake

It’s though out there being a Trump supporter. Trump supporters have to worry about harassment or discrimination when entering spaces that may be bipartisan or—gasp—liberal. Apparently, enough Trump supporters are seeking safe spaces that a new app, 63red Safe, has launched. The goal? To help pro-Trump conservatives find these safe spaces, including restaurants and other businesses, where they won’t have to worry about being maligned for supporting Donald Trump.

Sigh.

The app, which you can find in the Apple store, is basically Yelp but for people who wear MAGA hats while eating their chicken wings.

Scott Wallace, the creator of the app, appeared on Fox & Friends (where else?) last week to discuss his intentions with the app. “We wanted to make sure that people could let others know what restaurants may have a political bent,” he said. “We’re not looking to try and find restaurants that are ‘conservative’ or ‘pro-Trump.’”

Wallace alleges that Trump supporters are likely to be targeted by “socialist goon squads.” “I think Antifa was nothing compared between now and what’s coming in 2020,” he explained. “And I’m deeply concerned.”

“We want businesses to understand that there’s no money in politics,” Wallace continued while talking about his app that rates businesses based on their politics. “We want to make sure everyone’s safe out there.”

Well, so much for the Conservative “alpha male.”

Conservatives are notorious for mocking “safe spaces,” making this ironic to begin with. Unfortunately, I’m willing to bet that “everyone” doesn’t actually apply to everyone. Since Trump’s presidency started, rates of hate crimes based on sexual orientation, race, and religion have all gone up. A couple of people who work for Lord Dampnut had their dinner ruined.

Imagine the cognitive dissonance it takes to support a politician who locks children seeking asylum in prison camps a like they were a demigod, only to want a safe space to wear a MAGA hat without having so deal with public scrutiny.

While trans people are legitimately worried about being able to safely use public bathrooms, and same-sex couples are in fear of being attacked, and people of color fear having the cops called on them for simply existing, Trump supporters are worried about “socialist goon squads.”

If this were a comedy routine, it would feel too on-the-nose.

People be Crimeing

Jusssie Smollett has been accused of staging the attack on him because he was “dissatisfied with his salary,” Chicago Police Superintendent Eddie Johnson said Thursday.

The Empire actor on Wednesday was charged with a felony for filing a false report in the racist and homophobic assault he claimed to have suffered in Chicago last month. He turned himself in to police custody early Thursday.

Johnson said during a press briefing that Smollett paid two brothers $3,500 to stage the attack that garnered national attention.

Police initially investigated the incident as a hate crime, but they began to suspect the actor after reviewing footage from more than 50 security cameras in the area and interviewing the men they had in custody. The men told police that Smollett staged the attack because he was unhappy with his salary.

Smollett claimed two masked men attacked him on Jan. 29, wrapped a rope around his neck, poured bleach on him, yelled racial and homophobic slurs and said, “this is MAGA country” before fleeing the scene.

Smollett could face up to three years in prison.

What’s worse is now every time an actual hate crime is reported or MAGA heads do something odious, they’ll now point to the Smollett case to cast doubt on the story’s validity. So thanks for that, jackass. It doesn’t seem like his main objective was to smear Trump supporters, but you don’t need to lie to make Trump or his “enthusiastic” followers look bad.

For example:

A Coast Guard lieutenant and self-identified “white nationalist” was arrested for plotting a mass killing of Democratic politicians and media figures. Federal investigators uncovered 15 firearms and more than 1,000 rounds of ammunition in the basement of his Maryland home.

The man was contemplating pulling off acts of domestic terrorism to sow violence and disorder, including biological attacks and tainting American food supplies.

The suspect’s violent musings contemplated ways to “kill almost every last person on earth” and “establish a white homeland.” The government described the illegal weapons and drug charges that led to his arrest as the “proverbial tip of the iceberg.”

A search of the suspect’s computer found that he had created a hit list of targets including Democratic House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, and media personalities, including MSNBC’s Joe Scarborough and Chris Hayes. All critics or opponents of Donald Trump.

Guess which one of these Lord Dampnut publicly condemned?

Windy City Blues

Earlier this week, Jussie Smollett, best known for his portrayal of R&B singer Jamal Lyon on the Fox television series Empire, exited a Subway (the restaurant) in Chicago and was attacked by two men in ski masks. As the men attacked Smollett, who is black and openly gay, they hurled racial and anti-gay slurs at him and told him “This is MAGA country.” Smollett suffered a broken rib but was discharged from Chicago’s Northwestern Hospital Tuesday morning. Chicago police are investigating the attack.

Before his arrival in Chicago, Smollett had received threats, which for him is probably pretty common sadly, but many far-right extremists are claiming the Jussie Smollett attack is a left-wing hoax and a “false flag” and insist that Smollett is lying.

Because of course they are.

One of the would-be detectives on right-wing cesspool The Donald posted that Smollett “got mugged and is trying to turn himself into a race martyr.” Another described the attack as “another phony hate crime.” It’s not clear whether they think that the attack or hate crimes in general are “phony”.

In fact, many right-wing commentators and outlets been pushing the “fake news” narrative as well. Generally they’ve been following a, “That two Trump supporters were just waiting with rope and bleach at 2 a.m. for some celebrity to attack makes no sense” line of thinking.

Even right-wing Republicans who are expressed sympathy for Smollett were not safe from outraged Trump enthusiast and conspiracy buffs who believe that the attack on him is a hoax. Anti-Trump conservative Ana Navarro posted on Twitter, “I saw Jussie Smollett in Miami last week. I can’t believe this happened. It is sad and disgusting and deplorable.”

That didn’t sit well with Trump supporters who furiously attacked Navarro in the comments. One angry Trumper replied, “You disgusting hateful bitch….. U r the epitome of fake news and of a FAKE REPUBLICAN! Can not WAIT til God knee jerks you down ten notches @ananavarro!”

Gosh, who could possibly think that Trump supporters, who get this bent out of shape over tweets, would target and attack someone? Especially given their Dear Leader’s propensity for publicly attacking people who criticize him.

When a long list of prominent Democrats and CNN became the targets of a domestic terrorist in 2018, many on the far-right were quick to claim it was all a left-wing hoax as well. And now, many on the far right are assuming that the violent attack on Jussie Smollett is yet another left-wing plot to discredit Donald Trump’s presidency.

This presumes that Donald Trump’s presidency has any credibility to begin with.
